Privateer Procar: 1979 Group 4 BMW M1

This 1979 BMW M1 Group 4 race car is said to have been raced in 1984-85 in the hands of a Frenchman named G. Rossi. Few details are given, but extensive images are shown of what is supposedly this car in many European race and rally events under this Primagaz and Motul sponsor scheme. Built purely for racing, the Procar M1 shared little with its street car cousin other than the classic M88 straight-six motor, which was tuned to produced nearly double the power. This car is never said to have raced in the Procar series, but it is mentioned as being a Procar though no VIN is supplied. Find it here on eBay in Bruxelles, Belgium without reserve. The car is said to be in good un-restored condition. The exterior appears to be free of motorsport wounds and scars, while the livery looks period correct and matches early photos. It would be nice to know the racing history of this particular M1, though any serious bidder has no doubt done their research. The seller does state that it comes with a large amount of documentation, and the binders of newspaper clippings shown in one of the photo links look quite thick!

The interior appears clean and in good condition. It is also noticeably different from the street-going M1, especially the dash and gauge cluster. The addition of the rally computer and toggle switches suggests at least one form of motorsport that it have been involved in, though again no details are given.

The engine is said to have been re-built, though the seller doesn’t state how many miles have been put on it since. Further, no mention is made of any other mechanical needs, though it is said to come with an extra set of wheels.

Modern super-cars may be faster and more advanced, but the raw purity of the M1 keeps them appealing. This winged racing model is even less practical than the street car, but it would likely be welcomed at any number of vintage track events. We love seeing it offered in street license plates out in public, and in the vintage rally photos. We’re sure that the photographer must have seen at least a few exits on the Motorway.
