X5 gets 300 hp / 442 lb-ft Diesel - X5 40d - N57 engine

BMW has revealed that the X5 will get the N57 diesel which features the N57 diesel engine (306 hp, 442 lb-ft of torque) that debuted in the 740d. This motor features TwinPower Turbo Technology which is BMW's fancy way of saying a smaller turbo cuts in off idle and a big turbo take over up top.

You might be thinking, doesn't the X5 already have a diesel? Yes, it does, but in the United States the X35d has the older M57TU2D30 motor with 265 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. The new diesel is also mated to an 8 speed ZF automatic transmission vs. the 6 speed in the X35D.

So will we see this motor in the United States? Currently 1 out of 3 X5's is sold as a diesel which is huge. The diesel market is taking off so BMW is paying attention to it. The United States does have extremely stringent diesel emissions rules however. Personally, I would really, really like to see this motor in the upcoming X3. I'll take any diesel in the X3 though, but the new N57 would be icing on the cake. Not to mention something very fun to tune

I think you are right but it also seems bmw is applying the "TwinPower" to sequential setups? I'm looking for a definitive answer but haven't come up with one yet.

Today my girlfriend told me she loved driving my 35d and wants an SUV with similar power I suggested to her the new X5dm or go easy with Regular X5d, VW d, or Audi Q5d if not mistaken. she loves the TORQUE and BTW she drives like a bat out of hell, she confessed to me she was doing 110 mph on the highway and did not realize it, LOL, she said she panicked LOL. I thought she was going to tell me she had scratched the car or something buy was I sweating

And I bet it won't be available in the US... I would dump my 35i in a heartbeat for that monster of an X..

I'm hoping this new tri-turbo diesel that we will see more models in the US now.

Probably the Obama admininstration won't let them bring the tri turbo in without more clean air testing. They might as well start building a diesel/electric to keep the "greenies" happy.

I honestly don't understand what the government has against diesels.

Some of the clean diesels in europe just get insane mpg.
