Yeah, the exterior is IMO awesome. I love the look and the hatch Click here to enlarge Plus, its fairly hard to find nice unmolested Evo's.

Variety is the spice of life... I've owned 82 cars because I hold no loyalty to car for the long term. I enjoy owning a wide group of platforms and playing with them. I say try something new and have some fun. The STI's are fun cars with the right set of mods, costs are a bit cheaper but not so much so that it should be the main reason to switch. The 335i is a great car but cost to mods is pricey over all.

The STI would need a full exhaust, FMIC setup and a turbo upgrade to be seriously fast plus having the traction. Either way good luck whichever way you go!!!

No other turbo car will be as cheap to make power with as the N54. We're spoiled. Also, it's going to cost you way more than 3k to get out of your current car.

With that said, I'm trading my car in for a brand new Evo X within the next few days (Cameron don't tell anyone). Completely different beast than the 335. Drive one.

    Thanks Sledgehammer!

I think im going to keep the 335i for a few more years, save up some cash, and pick up eitherr an E92 M3 or C6 Z06. The Z06 would be a real nice upgrade (:

All good cars in their own right... I'd like to jump into a fully forged, HCI C6Z next year or the year after. It would less power but all motor and lots of fun IMO

I've had 2 STi's - a 2005 and a 2010. The '05 was a much more raw car than the 2010 was. At first the 2010 seems like a major upgrade over the '05 in terms of refinement, but it's still a very cheap econo-car interior. I know you think you don't care about the luxury car stuff in your E92, but believe me... after you spend a month or two driving a GR chassis STi, you'll regret it.

Note that the EJ25 is the regular Subaru 2.5l WRX/Forester turbo motor. The STi designation is EJ257. Only correcting you so you can do your research accurately. Click here to enlarge

The EJ257 is not at all efficient. It's been around going on 10 years, and they've only managed to bump the power in stock form by 10hp over that time frame. It was a great motor in 2003/4, but has been surpassed in many ways. When the GR chassis first came out for MY2008, they leaned the factory tune in order to bump fuel economy. A lot of cars blew up as a result. They have since fixed this, but there is still an inherent weakness in the ringlands as someone has already noted in this thread. Power delivery is also not at all linear, especially once you go with a bigger turbo and FMIC. It drives like a rental car until you hit ~3.5k rpm.

To get 400 to the wheels, you'll have to go FBO and to a rotated setup. I logged on to my iwsti.com account and found a car that I had bookmarked previously:

    Currently at 365.7WHP

    Engine
    - Rotated Garrett Turbo
    - Mishimoto intercooler NOW PAINTED BLACK
    - Upgraded fuel pump
    - Upgraded spark plugs
    - EWG
    - Catless Downpipes
    - Headers
    - Magnaflow Catless Turboback Exhaust
    - Cobb AP V2
    - Tial BOV
    - Mahle Pistons
    - Tuned by Nolimitmotorsport
    - Act 6 Puck Clutch
The Mahle Pistons were put in after he blew up #2 and 4 on the stock internals with the rotated setup. Had he run E85, he would have been over 400whp no problem, but then you definitely have to upgrade the internals. If you drag, you'll have to upgrade clutch and flywheel, as well as axles. The 6MT is a bulletproof trans even at 400+ whp.

Maintenance is fairly simple, although the plugs are a PITA due to the boxer motor layout. Changing the clutch is a pain also.

Handling is $#@!ty out of the box, but you can upgrade for next to nothing. However, even with a well sorted suspension setup, the car's balance still isn't right due to the weight distribution, and it will always understeer to some degree due to weight and AWD. The steering is also overboosted thanks to Toyota influence. When driving in winter conditions, I never felt like I had any kind of accurate feedback for grip levels.

Individual parts for the Subaru are dirt cheap and selection is vast compared to the N54. Trouble is that you'll have to upgrade so much to get to 400whp that the overall spend will start to equalize. The good news is once you have spent the money on the STi, it should be reliable for a long time.

As others have noted, the Evo is a better Asian/AWD platform to go after for big power. The latest gen Evo X is a much better car than the latest gen STi in just about every way.

I think going from an E92 to a GR is a big downgrade, unless you really feel the need to have a rally car. Thinking outside of the performance of the car, imagine going to a night club or other social event. Your E92 can pull some good tail; a GR STi will pull a bunch of Ken Block wanna-bes that want to hear your BOV.

Thank you for the very detailed response @whoosh , i gave a +rep

You made a lot of very clear points in your discussion. I rode in an 06 STi yesterday to get a feel for the car, and i really couldnt see myself trading money for that car. Seems like a downgrade. Plus, im not really looling to modify the internals and tranny just to acheive the same amount of power that the N54 can make with <$2000

Just don't get an SST if you plan on modding the car. Get a GSR with 5 spd.

Whats the biggest difference in the New evo X vs previous versions?

It seems the Evo 9 isnt as "desired" as the 8 and X

I think the Evo 9 MR with a 5spd swap is the holy grail of EVO enthusiasts (of EVOs sold in the US, not counting JDM EVOs). The 03 EVO 8 was the first EVO imported into the US. The 07 EVO 9 was the last EVO to come with the coveted 4G63 motor. The EVO X has a 4B11. The EVO 9 differs from the 8 because it has MIVEC which is basically variable valve timing. It is harder to tune than the EVO 8 but puts up bigger numbers when tuned correctly. The EVO 9 also has a much better stock turbo than the 8, a better BPV system and different front and rear bumpers. The MR model and rare RS model have much better pretty much everything than the GSR model EVOs but the one thing the GSR has that neither the MR nor the RS is a 5 spd tranny. None of the EVO trannies are really considered bulletproof stock but the 5 speed can be upgraded by a couple of different vendors and be capable of holding up to 1000HP and still having the very favorable gear ratio for drag racing since it's a 5 speed. The SST on the new EVO X is questionable at best. I know someone that just bought a 2013 EVO X and straight from the factory the SST was screwed up and had to be rebuilt. It is definitely the weak link of the EVO X. EVO X MR 6 speeds are very hard to find so alot of people just buy the 5 spd GSR. My buddy has an EVO X with an FP Black stock frame turbo, TBE, MBC and 5 spd GSR. It is very quick. 4B11 internals cannot hold what a 4G63 can hold stock but once both have upgraded internals I would say they are pretty equal. I don't think there are any 4B11 stroker kits available so once we start talking long rod setups or stroked motors then def the 4G63 is leaps and bounds faster than the 4B11 but the majority of EVOs running around aren't stroked or long rod setups. most are just stock motor with stock frame turbos and the 4B11 with similar mods will be right with a 4G63.

I would keep the BMW, low miles and you can make it much faster for less money reliably.

It all really depends on what your goals are for the car. The STI will cost more to make fast in a straight line.

I would barter one of my testicles for a clean evo 9 with ~20K miles and an unmolested engine... I would have one as a second car today if I could go buy one brand new for $32K like back in '06.

I would build an FP black beast...
    2007 335i (100% stock with mods)

    N54 is not a German 2JZ lol
