Toyota and BMW Silk Road 2 project to create mid-engined Supra and Z7 sports cars

This sounds almost too good to be true but if CAR is to believed a mid-engine Z7 and a new Supra are on the way. These are two new cars resulting from the Toyota and BMW technology partnership. The two cars are higher end sports cars than the upcoming Toyota and BMW shared platform hybrid Z4. The Supra and Z7 will be priced to compete with the Porsche 911 with a $98k price for the Toyota version.

A $100k Supra? Toyota may be pushing its luck. The Z7 is expected to come in at the $120k range which is fine for a mid-engine BMW sports car. The only problem then is that will people pay for a BMW sharing its platform with a Toyota? That certainly takes away a bit of the roundel luster that BMW banks on these days.

Power is expected to come from a turbocharged inline-6. The most likely candidate is the S55 3.0 liter direct injected and turbocharged inline-6 used in the M3/M4. It will be supplemented by an electric drivetrain producing somewhere over 100 horsepower. Combine that with 425+ horsepower from the turbo six and you have a recipe for a car around the 550 horsepower range. In other words, what the i8 should be.

Why would anyone want the i8 if for less money you can get a mid-engine hybrid offering higher end performance? That is a pretty big issue and there are several other questions about the market for a $100k Toyota Supra. A lot can change by the time any official word comes on this project if it even exists. CAR seems to be guessing as CAR often does.

I love the looks BUT, when you have the same car with to different names just reminds me of Chrysler/Dodge products they never seem to change. The price is steep but for those who can have it, fortunate bastards!! jajajaja

You can't just do a straight money conversion to estimate US prices. Doesn't work that way.

For example the M4 is £56,635.00, or converted US $95,049. But actually in US M4 starts at $64,200.

It's just a random rendering we have no idea what these will look like.

Of course not but no matter how we convert the price it's a ballpark figure. This is just speculation right now.

But it is a segment BMW may want to play in. I think this car will attack that segment

I hope so. Let's see what they do. For now it's speculation.
