Porsche's upcoming mid-engine 458 rival internally designated 988 and to use modular architecture that will be the basis for all future sports cars
This is the sports car that apparently has Lamborghini in a tizzy as its architecture will likely be used for the Huracan successor. The new car is internally dubbed the 988 during development as the Porsche marketing gurus figure out what to call it. Autocar states the car will use a flat-8 engine although that seems to be a guess. PorscheBoost has heard rumors the 4.6 liter V8 used in the 918 Spyder may be borrowed for this car.
At this point nobody really knows as plenty of internal squabbling is taking place. Turbocharged power may be employed as well but a target of over 600 horses at this point is the goal. This all may change as the architecture is not even expected until 2017.
That brings us to the main point which is that this new architecture will be used for all future Porsche sports car. That means mid-engine cars such as the Boxster and Cayman as well as for the rear engine layout of the 911. This does not sit well with Lamborghini as they are not interested in four-cylinder power for the Boxster and Cayman but a V10 for their Huracan successor.
Porsche wants to keep costs low with flexibility by using the same platform for every sports car. It makes sense on paper but it will have to be highly modular to accommodate so many different engines and designs. The 911 and the Boxster sharing the same platform somehow? If anyone can pull it off it would be Porsche.
