Tesla unveils the Cyber Truck which looks like something an 80's supervillain would drive

As per the usual with Tesla, we have a lot of hype and little substance. It seems Elon Musk has his fingers in every cookie jar today and Tesla is not focused. Maybe they will deliver what you see here (along with their Roadster and increased Model 3 production) but this Tesla Cyber Truck is going to generate some controversy.

    On paper, it sounds cool:

Performance claims are ridiculous too. Zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, and a 10.8-second quarter mile time. Musk claims over 500 miles of range, though 250-plus and 300-plus mile versions will also be offered. It'll be capable of 250kW fast charging too. There will be an entry-level rear-drive Cybertruck along with two- and three-motor all-wheel drive models.

Pricing starts at $39,900 and rises to $69,900 for the tri-motor version. Presumably, the tri-motor is the same "Plaid" drivetrain that's coming to the Model S.
The three models seem quite powerful and reasonably priced:

Here is how a Ford Raptor would stack up:

As with most Tesla products, everything sounds amazing on paper. The technical specs are impressive. Will they actually deliver it though?

And what about the styling? It is as if someone was inspired by the Vector W2 and Delorean DMC-12 having a truck baby:

I just can’t. I wanted to like this thing and the specs are impressive, but holy hell, it is a face only a mother (Elon) could love.

If it looked more like the Rivian and had these specs and pricing, I’d be super excited. But dang.

And did you watch the reveal? It was painful. Like Elon was drunk (or high?).

He’s a terrible public speaker. Plus, the whole armored window demo was a disaster. Eek. Someone is getting fired.

The guy is a scam artist/bull$#@! artist. His success stems from flipping business and then pouring that billions of seed money into what have pretty much amounted to a bunch of semi-successful ventures. His 20billion net worth is just the cumulative equity of these ventures. If his businesses were liquidated right here right now he would probably be in massive debt. Not sure why anyone thinks of this guy as a "genius." Just a lot of hype around the specific sectors he decided to venture into... Probably a public image campaign he funded himself...

Tesla's are just now becoming half-way decent vehicles and then he released this trash prototype. Probably merely to capture headlines before news got out that his latest space-x rocket launch exploded... Someone let Elon know that High-school cardboard box cars don't actually make for good production vehicles.

I don't think the truck appeals to the mass market, in the presentation he talked about trucks from the big brands looking the same over the decades. While that is true, it is true for a reason; that's what people who buy trucks want!

Ford, GM, Dodge, etc. have all done market research to know that's the style people want. Therefore, while the specs are impressive including the rugged body material, I wish Tesla stayed closer to mainstream on the design side.

Tesla would have stolen the market with that price, those performance specs and a close to mainstream (Rivian) design.

    too bad....

Tow 10,000 pounds? For how long, like 12 seconds?

I dig the look though. In matte black with ramming bars front and rear on knobby tires? That’s the Tumbler, man. I’m Batman.

I don't understand why he had to make it so ugly and unappealing, does Elon think this will drive sales?

Hes literally crowdfunding for a vehicle le he has 0 means of production for. Just like he did with the original tesla that he is still failing to deliver on. Not to mention Tesla's in general rank below even chinese brand vehicles in terms of standard vehicle metrics. Body panels fit poorly, the cars arent aerodynamic, and the wind noise from in the cabin is excessive. Maybe they have gotten better over th years but you dont just start out producing refined vehicles. You learn this stuff over decades of production.

Time to groupon some more flame throwers to raise some quick cash?

Towing capacity has a lot to do with HEAT rejection of the cooling system (oil, coolant, and trans temps) which the electric motors probably produce less of. The other factor is torque which again electric motors have plenty of right from 0rpm. No turbo lag and no large displacement to build momentum. I can easily see electric cars towing significantly better. But at max power like that how long with the battery last? That 400 mile rang probably becomes 50 miles.

Yeah towing killlls range and highway towing is going to be an EV truck weak spot for a while.
Around town EV trucks will make sense because they have so much torque and can regen some of that energy when braking (I would imagine they could make the regen braking much more aggressive than they currently do in a truck/towing).

I love how they compare it to a raptor which wasn't meant for towing due to the rear leaf springs being designed for jumps....

Cool concept but it's really ugly imo.

Yes much worse economy, but much is mitigated by strong regen if there are hills or in town driving.

Even if you compare to the max towing of F150s only a few select configurations can tow a lot more than 10,000lbs, and at what cost to the 0-60? Its about the overall package not one single metric.

And the max towing configuration (13,200lbs) of the F150 is a 4x2 (2wd) Click here to enlarge

The point is 10,000lbs is very respectable and very competitive

if only it looked "normal" damn

Who even buys a truck for 0-60? Accelerating fast can put your load at risk. When it's fully loaded with payload acceleration differences are probably marginal.

Plus range is not guaranteed, and when I'm looking for a truck I want to be able to tow long distances. No matter how fast it can charge it still won't beat a 5 min fill up, especially when time is money.

But the truck is indeed a cool concept and I would to have one if it wasn't so ugly.

Plenty of people buy the H.O. v6 turbo engine in the Limited and Raptor for the acceleration and performance vs. the lower power V6 turbo engine. 0-60 may not be the #1 reason but it's about the entire package.

No one is saying to use launch control with a full load, trucks that can seriously tow are also daily driven w/o any load, sometimes the majority of time, or even 99% of the time. Therefore 0-60 matters.

Also its not just 0-60 for daily driving but when towing it is always nice to have extra power/torque available to you when you need it for passing, inclines, etc. Ask anyone that tows whether they would like to have more or less power available when they need it, you'll get your answer.

I do agree its straight fugly

0-60 doesn't matter unless you're WOT accelerating at every traffic's light, also power and torque =/= fast acceleration times, that depends on how well power is out down. Yes it's nice to be able to pass easily on day to day basis but the full potential of the 0-60 won't be utilized unless you're going WOT.

I tow alot, and when I max out my truck the neglible difference in power is not noticeable, because I have to change my driving style when I tow. Sure it's nice to have an extra hundred horse power but that will only yield a second decrease in 0-60, which from around 13 seconds to 12 seconds when towing max capacity from what I experience. This is pretty much not even noticable and you'll have to drive differently to fit into traffic flows. You also won't be doing much passing at all when towing heavy loads so again not really a huge factor, likely you'll be below the speed ljmit depending on trailer ratings.

But yes more power is always nice, just the difference between the cyber truck and an f150 is not even remotely significant enough when towing imo.
