    1970 Chevelle with Diesel Duramax: 1700lb ft and 32 mpg

    This is amazing. I spend a lot of time thinking about interesting engine swaps, this one never crossed my mind.

    950 hp and 1700 lb ft of torque, while getting 32 mpg. Stock block except carillo rods.

    very nice. i've been beating on my 05 duramax at work and they've proven to be a good platform. the only thing that bothers me is that its an izuzu.

    My career is all about having powerful trucks. the champ in our crew is a Scania R730 which makes 720hp and 2600 lb-ft. the way that thing pulls in any gear is just insane, i can't imagine how that amount of torque would work in a car.

    Making big numbers with these diesel engines isn't hard at all. they are not designed to make big numbers, they are designed to work and work and work and work without needing to a basic service for a long time. now if you delete the reliability factor, and just get focused on power and torque, the result will be astonishing.
    I've heard a dude in Sweden put his hands on a 16L V8 Scania diesel engine and he squeezed 1500hp and 4000lb-ft from that engine.

    That is truly incredible. Really the only drawback to these engines is their size. A big engine like this would never fit in a BMW 3 series.

    Are there any good options for smaller diesel engines? 2-4 liters, 6 cylinders?

    The engine of these things is massive and heavy. just a truck can can have it, in a passenger car the chassis can't handle the weight.
    the options for a small displacement diesel are not limited, it just depends on the usage and the goal of having it. D-Max, Cummins, Isuzu, Fiat, Mitsubishi... all have 2-4 liters I6 diesels.

    Most of the 2-4 liter engines seem to be sadly unsophisticated. 2 liters and under has some interesting options, such as the volkswagon TDI, but I don't see anything from 2-4 that I would consider to be a modern powerplant. Maybe I'm not seeing the right engines?

    Sorry for the late response.

    Choosing the engine really depends on your goals. if you are looking for big numbers and make a monster, you should look for a small diesel engine in trucks. they are mostly detuned to achieve more reliability so there are a lot of untouched potentials. They can handle any type of modifaction you add without a problem.
    if your goal is to have something less crazy, there alot of nice diesels for passenger cars such as Toyota's 2.2 L4, Nissan's 3.0 V6, the old 3.0 liter iron block I6 from BMW and...

    Thanks Sorena. Something I've been looking at is the Nissan RD28, which is nice because it bolts up to the various skyline transmissions and is an inline-6. But it would not be as much of a monster as some of the larger small truck diesels.

    that's a really nice engine too. The Nissan Patrols here equipped with that engine all got rusted and died, but their engine comes to life with just one start. try to get the latest ones, they were the most hightech diesels at the time.
