Mercedes-Benz turbo inline-6 motors to debut in next generation E-Class and trickle down throughout the range

This is not the first BenzBoost has heard of Mercedes-Benz returning to the inline-6 motor. Way back in 2011 BenzBoost published an article stating Mercedes was on track to downsize their motors and revive the inline-6 which they last produced in 1997. Mercedes is on track to do so already downsizing their V8's and the inline-6 motor which will also spawn inline-4's based on the architecture will debut with the next generation E-Class for the 2016 model year.

These will be direct injected and turbocharged powerplants as fuel efficiency is at a premium today. The upcoming W205 C-Class will also receive these motors as part of a facelift after the next generation E-Class debuts with them. Displacement details and power figures are all speculation at this point but the 3.0 liter range for a six and 2.0 liter range for a four-cylinder seems to be the general area.

This is interesting. I wonder how it will compare to the N54/5 motors.

Things are getting interesting. Mercedes will have an answer to the S4 and 335 finally.

Developing a new inline six is a very astute move on M-B's part. The engine is inherently balanced, easy to turbocharge, lower cost to build than a V8, and even has slightly better inherent engine balance. Contrary to popular belief, a V8 has a small balance problem that is usually disregarded in technical literature. As car makers go to four cylinder engines and learn more about coping with infrequent power impulses, the slight variations in six vesus 8 cylinder engines will be easy to cope with.

It's also smaller displacement, which means better fuel economy. I'm sure MB is doing this for the same reasons BMW and Ford are: fleet mileage requirements.
